Joseph Nye, Jr. is a Distinguished Professor at Harvard University, Dean Emeritus and former
Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

He received his bachelor’s degree with honors from Princeton University, won a Rhodes Scholarship
at Oxford University and obtained a PhD in political science from Harvard.
He served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Chairman of the
National Intelligence Council (1993-1994).
Key works include:
(1) Soft Power and Great-Power Competition (Springer Singapore, 2023).
(2) Is the American Century Over? (Malden: Policy Press, March, 2015)
(3) The Future of Power (New York: Public Affairs, 2011)
(4) Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics (New York: Public Affairs, 2004).

He is the author of the concepts of soft and smart power. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the top 100 global thinkers.
