We are pleased to invite you to an exciting seminar where we will try to understand what complex systems are and what tools are available to study them.
In January 2000, Stephen Hawking said in an interview: ‘I think the next century will be the century of (the study of) complexity’. Indeed, in a world where the amount of data is constantly growing and new types of connections between individual agents are emerging, knowledge of complex systems is key to understanding many phenomena. This knowledge allows us to predict behaviour, identify patterns, and understand the laws of information, ideas, and innovation.
Join us to deepen your knowledge of complex systems and their importance for understanding human behaviour and social phenomena.

The uniqueness of this seminar lies in its interdisciplinary approach to the study of complex systems – from social and economic models to natural phenomena. We will understand how the interactions of individual agents shape complex behaviour and learn about the tools to study it.

COURSE TOPICS

  • Power laws. Why some processes in real life follow simple formulas
  • Agent-based modelling: how individual agents interact in a simple economy to create complex behaviour
  • Schelling’s segregation model. How Local Preferences Influence Social Structures
  • Networks. Why are networks a source of complexity? How information flows through networks and their impact on society
  • Forest fires and cellular automata. How natural models can help in understanding risks and system dynamics

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:

  1. Use of modelling for real-world forecasting.
  2. Practical insights for forecasting and analytics.
  3. Applicable concepts in the real world.

THIS COURSE IS FOR

  1. Public/corporate sector managers and business owners – to better understand market behaviour, information flows and new opportunities in a dynamic environment.
  2. Specialists in public administration – to understand the models of interaction and the impact of local decisions on the overall structure.
  3. Researchers and analysts – those who study complex systems, social and economic processes using modelling and data analysis.
  4. Risk management specialists – experts who forecast and minimise risks in finance, logistics, business processes, etc.
  5. Technological innovators and developers – specialists who work with big data, artificial intelligence and innovative approaches to processing complex systems.
  6. Anyone who wants to delve deeper into the principles that help understand the complexity of the modern world.

We recommend this course to those who want to

Get acquainted with the methods of agent-based modelling and network analysis that allow not only describing but also predicting the dynamics of such complex systems as the economy, social processes and information networks.

Form a vision of the functioning of specific models to understand the processes that shape social phenomena and processes.

Develop practical knowledge and skills for analysing modern challenges and deep understanding of human behaviour in complex systems.
