In the history of European political thought, we find at least three fundamental versions of the concept of social contract – those of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Based on different models of social contract, different forms of political nations can be created.
Nation is an ambiguous concept. It can serve historical progress, but it can also be dangerous. On the one hand, it consolidates people and inspires them to great achievements. On the other hand, some of the most horrific crimes in human history have been committed in its name.

Uniqueness of the Programme

Benedict Anderson argues that nations are always imagined communities. However, social imagination is by no means fruitless. It can serve as a powerful tool for historical development, but at the same time it can lead to the socio-political and moral degradation of communities, peoples and nations.

THIS COURSE IS FOR

  • Representatives of state authorities, local self-government bodies, political advisors and think tanks.
  • Representatives of civil society organisations, movements and initiatives working in the fields of democracy, human rights, public dialogue and decolonisation of thinking.
  • Those who shape or evaluate policies at the intersection of identity, citizenship, social cohesion, and security.
  • Individuals who, through their own experience of serving the state or community, are seeking new meaning in social solidarity and unity.

Social contract and political nation

After completing the programme, participants will

  1. Understand classical concepts of social contract — from Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau to contemporary interpretations in the context of democracy, public administration, and civil society.
  2. Be able to analyse the relationship between power, law, and citizens as the basis of political order and social stability.
  3. They will understand the nature of the political nation — as a community not only of ethnic, but above all of value, moral and institutional unity.
  4. They will be able to critically evaluate national narratives and ideological myths, distinguishing political identity from manipulative nationalism.
  5. Form their own understanding of Ukraine’s social contract — as a balance between the state, citizens, community and justice in conditions of war and reconstruction.
  6. Learn to apply philosophical concepts to real management and socio-political processes, such as the legitimacy of power, the formation of civic trust and social cohesion.
  7. Develop reflective thinking skills, the ability to view political events through the prism of values, moral choices, and historical patterns.
  8. Formulate proposals for a new type of social contract that combines the principles of freedom, responsibility, and solidarity.

We recommend this course if you want to:

  • understand how a political nation is formed — not as an ethnic community, but as a union of citizens united by common values
  • gain insight into the underlying logic of social contract — what makes a state legitimate and society cohesive
  • learn to analyse political processes through the prism of philosophy, ethics, and history, rather than just technology and ratings
  • develop intellectual and civic reflection in order to act as a conscious citizen and community leader
